Rhode Island has one of the most active East Coast Greenway state planning committees in the nation and one of the most advanced statewide plans.

The Coventry Greenway, a 4.5-mile path (2 miles paved) designated as an official segment of the East Coast Greenway, was a rail-trail conversion created through a unique partnership between town officials and a private contractor. Elsewhere in the state, the Greenway follows the Trestle Trail (western Coventry), the old Washington Secondary rail corridor (through West Warwick, Warwick, and Cranston), and the Blackstone River Bikeway from Providence to the Massachusetts state line in Woonsocket.

Two segments of the Blackstone River Bikeway, in the towns of Lincoln and Cumberland, have been designated as segments of the ECG. View a map of the Rhode Island section of the Blackstone River Bikeway.

An alternate route has also been identified to connect Providence to southeastern Massachusetts. A planned trail, the Warren Bikepath, will connect Swansea, MA with the East Bay Bike Path in Warren, RI. Users can then ride north on the East Bay Bike Path to East Providence, then cross the Seekonk River to Providence's East Side using the Washington Bridge's separated bike/pedway.
