About the ECG in New York

When completed, the East Coast Greenway in New York will follow two separate routes, (Eastern & Western) which both end in downtown Manhattan and utilize NY Waterway ferry service to connect to the East Coast Greenway in New Jersey. The primary focus in New York is to fully complete these two routes. Once these two routes are completed our focus will move towards incorporating Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island into the East Coast Greenway. It is our goal to offer East Coast Greenway users multiple options in New York because the culture and diversity of New York City simply cannot be captured from one route.

We are also very excited because in 2007 the East Coast Greenway unveiled our Current Travel Route in New York and every other state the ECG passes through. The Current Travel Route utilizes on road routing to link to the 20% completed road separated trail currently in the East Coast Greenway system. The introduction of the Current Travel Route in 2007 marks the first time the East Coast Greenway has produced a continuous route from Maine to Florida that users can travel today!

The Current Travel Route in New York City is 90% complete as off road trail. Westchester County is currently all on road. From Westchester the route connects to NYC via the Shore Rd. Greenway and continues onto the Pelham Parkway Greenway. From the Pelham Parkway Greenway the ECG travels north along the Bronx River Greenway and connects to the Mosholu Greenway via a newly constructed Greenway through Bronx River Forest. From the Mosholu the route connects to a Greenway in Van Cortlandt Park and exits the park on Broadway. From Broadway the route uses on road connections and the Broadway Bridge to link to the Hudson River Greenway near Dyckman St. The route then travels for 13 miles down the Hudson River Greenway where users can link to ferry service at World Financial Center or Pier 11 to continue their journey into New Jersey.

As more off road pathways are completed we will incorporate these paths into our Current Travel Route to give our users an optimal experience. At the same time the NY Committee will continue to work to make the Eastern & Western routes 100% road separated traffic free pathways. Ensuring the safety and comfortable use of our Current Travel Route and continuing to work to complete our Eastern & Western routes through New York will be our top priorities in the immediate future.
