The Greenway route enters Massachusetts in the north in Salisbury, where it uses the Border to Boston and Bike to the Sea trails to get close to the Boston line. The State Committee is examining four options for getting through the city, including a waterfront route which links to the Neponset Greenway or a more inner-city route which will use Southwest Corridor Park, scenic Forest Hills cemetery, and a newly-established urban wildlife sanctuary on the grounds of the former Massachusetts State Hospital. From Boston, the Greenway will head west to Worcester (using the Charles River Bikepath and the Central Massachusetts Rail-Trail), where it use the Blackstone River Bikeway to reach Providence, RI. View the map from Worcester to the Rhode Island border.
An alternate route is being developed to directly link Boston and Providence, RI. Trails that may become part of this alternate include the Old Colony Trail (Mansfield), the Taunton River Trail (Taunton/Somerset), and trail in Swansea. This alternate will cross from Swansea, MA to Warren, RI, where the trail will head north along the East Bay Bike Path to Providence.
